James Cameron wonders if he would ever return to Stranger franchise. Released in 1986, Cameron’s Aliens saw the return of Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) alongside a team of trained marines after a space colony succumbs to the threat of the Xenomorphs. Most recently, the franchise made a highly anticipated return to the big screen with Alien: Romulusas a group of young colonists find themselves faced with a horrific scenario aboard an abandoned space station.
Cameron was asked if he would ever be willing to return to the Stranger universe speaking to The GuardianWhile the director hasn’t definitively ruled out the possibility of directing another film for the franchise, he did say that there are some obstacles in his way. Check out Cameron’s full response below:
It’s kind of a wasteland at this point. I wouldn’t rule anything out, but I have 23 other projects lined up before this hypothetical one, so I guess with me being 70, it’s not going to happen. You have to pick your battles at some point. You know what I mean?
James Cameron’s Aliens is a perfect sequel
Cameron’s film established many fondly remembered franchise elements
With AliensCameron built on what Ridley Scott established in the original film, going beyond the claustrophobic and shocking horror to take the fight to the Xenomorphs. Fresh off the success of The TerminatorCameron’s sequel did exactly what the title suggested and envisioned a large-scale xenomorph outbreak, complete with the formation of hives. It also established how they could defeat even the most heavily armed regiment of Colonial Marines. In addition to an expansive setting and a larger cast, the sequel also added new layers to the story that would become pillars of the franchise.
Despite leaning towards the action genre, Aliens remains incredibly faithful to its predecessor’s mandate, while also building on its deeper themes, subtext, and on-screen horror.
Aliens The film never lost touch with the original film’s priorities, despite an escalation in menace and spectacle. The more subtle threat of the Weyland-Yutani corporation continues to loom in the background, as businessmen like Burke failed to pay attention to the horrors the Nostromo crew faced, and thus sent more innocent civilians to their deaths in their pursuit of profit. Despite its shift toward the action genre, Aliens remains incredibly faithful to its predecessor’s mandate, while simultaneously building on its deeper themes, subtext, and on-screen horror.
Cameron’s work on Avatar allowed him to push even further the technical wonders that the science fiction genre can offer. Moreover, while he may not have led the development of a new Stranger slice, Romulus Director Fede Álvarez has credited Cameron and Scott for helping him develop his film, showing that Cameron is willing to contribute. However, with future adventures on Pandora on the horizon Avatar: Fire and AshIt’s clear that Cameron is focused on bringing his new, more optimistic sci-fi franchise to fruition.
