James Cameron reflects on the evolution of the sci-fi genre as he wrestles with his new Terminator movie

James Cameron addresses the current challenges facing the science fiction genre, particularly in the development of Terminator 7. Even though he continues to be busy working on the next one Avatar sequels, Cameron is confirmed to be writing a Terminator 7 scenario. After the realization The Terminator And Terminator 2: Judgment Dayboth of which have become science fiction classics, Cameron moved away from the Terminator franchise until his return as producer and his help in developing the story of the last installment, Terminator: Dark Fate.

In an interview with The Guardian, Cameron reflects on how the science fiction genre has changed since his early days Terminator moviesand how this is largely due to the way real-world technology has dramatically accelerated and transformed society in just a few decades. He is candid about how some of his early work in the genre doesn’t stand the test of time due to these real-world changes, while acknowledging that his work has aged well. People compliment me like, “Oh, it still holds up.” I think that’s true of Terminator 2 qualitatively. I think Terminator 1 is pretty dated qualitatively, even though it’s still a pretty intriguing story. Some people are interested in the idea that it was a little bit prescient in some ways, like the emergence of AI, the potential existential threat of AI, which is changing our world before our eyes.

We’re at a time when it’s becoming increasingly difficult to write science fiction because we live in a science fiction world every day. I’m working on some of the themes that I want to incorporate into a new Terminator movie or maybe even some kind of reboot of a larger narrative, and it’s difficult right now because I want to clear away the smoke that’s formed around all of this. It’s going to be a journey that we’re probably going to follow for the rest of human history, but the next few years are going to be very revealing.

Shonda Rimes has opened up about removing some storylines from the hit ABC series. Scandal because they were too similar to real events that occurred during the filming of the series. The boys also found itself oddly prescient at times despite the over-the-top nature of its satire, though that arguably helped the series.

While technology will inevitably become obsolete in some stories, themes and commentary are what can endure, which is part of the reason why Terminator 2 It still works just as well. As Cameron continues to develop Terminator 7he can first prioritize his themes and commentsknowing that these elements can be timeless, even if the story’s sci-fi technology quickly becomes obsolete.
